Wanstead Farmers Co-op shares profits with its farmer-owners

Wyoming, ON, Dec. 11, 2019  Wanstead Farmers Co-operative held their annual general meeting and cited growth and profitability, allowing them to pay out $120,000 of its profits to their owners.

The annual general meeting held on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the Wyoming Fair Building had over 120 people attending.

Martin Gerrits, Wanstead Farmers Co-op board president commented that despite all the weather challenges this year, the co-op saw a year of growth and profitability. Gerrits thanked farmers and member-owners for their patience and determination in getting through such a challenging season. “With such a wet spring and a cold start to our planting season, it was a wonder that crops even got planted this year".

Gerrits also recognised the efforts of the staff this tough year saying, "the staff at Wanstead are second to none".

Peter Kelly, Wanstead Farmers Co-op general manager reiterated the problematic year. Still, despite all of this, the fiscal year of 2019 was a profitable one. Peter was pleased to announce that sales increased this year, along with the management of their overhead costs, allowed this positive outcome. He thanked the membership for supporting the co-op this year, and the Board for their guidance, leadership and support. Peter recognised his staff and thanked them for their dedication and hard work. "We could not be successful without you".

Two directors who are retiring this year were recognised. Joe Joosten, board vice president from Wyoming has been a board member for 19 years. Joosten accepted a beautiful framed print and said, "being part of the Board was very rewarding. I've met a lot of people and encourage others to step forward to become leaders". Also retiring from the board is Kevin Forbes. The board is currently looking to replace Joosten and Forbes.

Joe Donkers of the Stonepicker Brewing Company was guest speaker at the event and explained how his company started from humble beginnings. "It all started with a bucket used for picking stones, an old turkey burner, water, hops, yeast and malt. Using this basic equipment has made Stonepicker Brewing Company Inc. what it is today".
