Wanstead Farmers' Co-operative Co., Limited is a farmer owned progressive multi-service farm supply and grain marketing business that has been in operation for the last 95 years.

We are currently seeking an experienced Operations Branch Manager for our Wyoming branch. This is a full-time salary position.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Branch Manager is responsible for the daily supervision of operations and trucking staff as well as the day to day safe operation and maintenance and/or security of equipment, machinery and inventory, such as custom application trucks, plant equipment (including grain bins and dryer), chemicals, fertilizer and grain.  

Coordinates the various business segments, and related services, ensuring that functions are carried out in a safe efficient manner while delivering value to customers. This position requires a working knowledge and proper handling of crop protection, seed, grain, delivery, application and bulk fertilizer and overall operations.  May be required to work at the scale, elevator, and fertilizer blending.


Key responsibilities

  • Accountable for the safety, efficient operation, supervision and continued expansion of the various operations and services which include fertilizer blending, storage, seed, crop protection, grain receiving, grading, drying and grain handling as well as related services.
  • Schedule shifts during busy or peak seasons to ensure proper staffing requirements are met, as well as train operational employees on proper operating procedures of equipment. 
  • Maintain a staff of 6 – 13, which fluctuates with seasonal demands. Responsible for recruiting, training and motivating staff.
  • Receive grain and grades by sampling, testing, and weighing the product to ensure quality aligns with Wanstead’s standards, as well as dries, stores, and ships grain as required. Responsible for the maintaining the condition of grain in storage.
  • Responsible for overseeing maintenance and repairs for equipment including vehicles and buildings; sourcing parts and services.
  • Become proficient at the use of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system as required in operations. Provide suggestions on how this system can be better utilized in the operations.
  • Identify areas where efficiencies can be gained to control departmental costs.
  • Recommends to the General Manager future capital needs such as trucks, trailers, loaders, blenders, tanks, forklifts, etc.
  • Maintain an active interest in self-development and personal improvement.
  • Actively participates in education and training provided by Wanstead with the purpose of maintaining and developing technical and industry knowledge and to enhance customer service.
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, and business ethics codes in all areas, e.g. safety, credit, proper management of assets, pricing, uniforms, etc. and maintains the appropriate professional image.
  • Follows the Wanstead Workplace Health, Safety & Environmental policies, and procedures. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Job requirements

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • High degree of technical agricultural knowledge
  • Computer skills, including proficiency with the MS Office Suite
  • Leadership, planning and problem-solving skills
  • 40-50-hour weeks, overtime and weekend work as necessary
  • Well organized with professional conduct
  • Able to work both indoor and outdoor during all seasons.

Required qualifications

  • Prior supervisory or managerial experience
  • Post-secondary education in Agricultural or business-related program an asset
  • DZ licence an asset (or willingness to obtain)
  • Grain Grading Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • 5+ years of experience in an agri-business setting
