Weed Pressures

Weed Pressures

As the spring arrives and the planting season is underway weeds are taking over the fields.  Perennial weeds are out in full force with annual weeds right behind them.  Identifying weeds along with recognizing weed pressures are key to developing a successful herbicide program.  A heavy weed pressure is 1 weed for every 10 square feet, while a medium pressure is 1 weed for every 20 square feet.  A low pressure is 1 weed for every 50 square feet.  It is recommended to spray when there is 1 weed at heavy pressure, 2 weeds at medium pressure or 5 weeds at a low pressure.  Identifying weeds along with threshold levels are used to determine the appropriate time, product, and rate to spray for each field.

Also remember to keep in mind the critical periods to control weeds before yield loss occurs.  In corn weeds must be controlled between the 2nd and 8th leaf stage, soybeans between the 1st and 3rd trifoliate leaf stage.  In cereal crops weeds need to be controlled at the early stages of growth.  Bring in samples of problem and heavy to medium pressure weeds for your crop specialist to help identify.
